Patients with chronic skin diseases and scarring were treated with CBD ointment to test if CBD is effective against these issues. CBD improved the condition of the skin, and can be used safely to treat those with chronic skin conditions
This study aims to see if CBD ointment can help safely minimize the effects of chronic skin diseases and scarring.
Eczema, psoriasis, skin infections, and autoimmune disorders are common skin issues that can affect people of all ages. Eczema usually presents with itchy, inflamed red patches of skin and is more common in children than adults. Psoriasis usually presents as well defined red patches covered with scaly white skin. Eczema and Psoriasis are likely both caused by a mixture of environmental and genetic factors. They both can be detected by factors like improper immune cell regulation and inflammatory messengers throughout the body, not just at the site of the skin abnormality. Acne is another skin condition that is caused by the dysregulation of hormones and can leave minor scarring in 95% of patients. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid that can bind to multiple receptors throughout the body. There is research lacking on the safety and effectiveness of CBD isolate (without any THC) in skin products.
The patients were treated for three months. In this time, the hydration level increased by about 6% in the tested areas. The water loss and elasticity both improved by about 20% in the tested areas. The photos show reduced pigmentation and scarring of the skin as well.
According to previous studies, CBD and other cannabinoids may be effective at treating chronic conditions because they can lower the level of inflammation causing messengers called cytokines in the body. This study showed that treatment with CBD ointment improved the quality of life for the patients in the study. The fatty acids in the ointment likely helped to improve the elasticity and hydration of the skin by decreasing sebum secretion as well. The CBD ointment decreased the itchy feeling in the eczema patients and helped them sleep better. No allergic reactions were documented during the study. In patients with acne scarring, the CBD decreased inflammation and proliferation. This may be very helpful to patients with acne because the current treatment for severe acne, known as accutane, has serious side effects that CBD ointment does not. This study showed also that CBD decreases keratin cell growth, which makes it helpful in the treatment for chronic skin conditions like psoriasis.
20 patients who had chronic skin conditions for over 6 months were selected for the study, between 20 and 80 years of age. 5 had psoriasis, 5 had eczema, and 10 had scarring. Probes were used to determine the hydration, water loss, and elasticity of the skin. Photos were taken of the skin before and after treatment.
Though there is lacking knowledge about how safe and effective CBD and other cannabinoids are, increasing studies show it may be a safe, hypoallergenic, low side effect solution to many chronic conditions.
